Shipping agents plan, organize and control the transport of goods by sea. They are in close contact with customers and advise, for example, in terms of transport options, freight costs or customs regulations. From the office they take over the ship handling in the port: from the loading registration at the terminal in the port over the control of the container loading up to the subsequent loading confirmation to the shipping company. Accounting also plays a role - shipping merchants calculate costs, create quotes, offers and billing.
In the area of clearing, shipping merchants and the local port authorities and service providers are doing their utmost to ensure that a ship can easily call at the port. In addition, it is about quickly implementing all the requirements of the ship's management and the crew while lying in the port. Visits on board are part of the job. Organizational skills and reliability are in demand in this profession. A good time management is a prerequisite: The processes are tightly timed and all the tasks have to be done by the time the ship leaves. The working environment is international. Forwarding Agents
Forwarding agents organise the worldwide transport of goods. For example, they ensure that the oversized and heavy transformer is transported from Munich to Bremerhaven, or from Japan via Hamburg to the automobile manufacturer in Germany. Their tasks include handling import and export orders by sea, land and air. They also handle LCL and FCL containers and project shipments. There is a lot of coordination work behind this: they advise the customer on the best means of transport and route. Subsequently, various processes must be precisely planned and coordinated.
Forwarding agents carry out commercial and administrative tasks. For example, they prepare quotations or invoices for customers. It is important to keep an overview at all times. Careful work and a high level of organizational ability are necessary characteristics in the profession. In an international working environment, English is usually spoken, so good language skills are a prerequisite. Mathematical knowledge and analytical skills are important for preparing quotations.
